A path for wheelchair users is available to the Main Hall, although it is unable to go inside because of the steps at the entrance. The temple was built in the 13th century, it is the head temple of the Engakuji Branch of the Rinzai Zen Sect, and the second-ranked of the five great Zen temples of Kamakura.

The entrance of the temple is right in front of East exit of Kita-kamakura Station. It is convenient as there are no steps.
