The streets of central Yokohama, from Yokohama station through Kanagawa prefectural government to Yamashita Park are flat and well-planned so that wheelchairs can move easily. This area was reclaimed in the period from the later part of the 17th century to the 19th century.

The arrival of the American Navy to Yokohama about 160 years ago triggered the city's opening of its port to foreign ships.
Foreign settlements were established where currently Chinatown exists today.

Early facilities of the Yokohama port were insufficient and they became unable to handle bigger ships. Those facilities were renewed to build tourist facilities such as museums related to the port, trade, and ships which form one of Yokohama's special features.

To Shinko district, take the JR Keihin-Tohoku Line to Sakuragicho station, go down from the platform to the ground-level ticket gates and further to the district as well.

The station guide of Yokohama Station is here.
